Galen

1940: Katherine Wykle (1869 to 1957), at the age of 68 was not only the first female mayor of Clyde (Town of Galen), New York; she was the first women elected to head ANY village government in New York State, and one of the first female mayors in the entire county. And it is entirely true - a village which had been in sad financial shape when she took office was in the black by the end of her first term! One wonders how she managed it, with a board whose members were all from the opposing party!
